Novel Geographies is a research project utilizing a suite of analytical project-specific softwares. The project links two previously discrete data sets: the online digitized text of Project Gutenberg and geospatial data. First, a data-mining software is used to collect all references to geographic locations in major novels. From this data set, the geographic references are mapped by a second software to create analytical maps, revealing the geospatial structure embedded in the text. The final output of the Novel Geographies softwares are a collection of maps which can be analyzed to attain a deeper understanding of the geographical focus of major world literature.
